KCHS Basketball: A Force to Be Reckoned With

The KCHS basketball team is demonstrating a winning formula built on a strong defensive foundation and a focused, game-by-game mentality. The team proudly, "hangs their hat on the defensive side and let our defense try to run into our offense," said Coach Manning. This emphasis on defense appears to be a key to their success, with Manning noting their comfort with the team's defensive depth.

Following a commanding performance, the message from the coach is clear and forward-looking. The immediate focus shifts to the next challenge, with an acknowledgment of tough competition ahead, such as their upcoming game against Valencia. The team understands the need for diligent preparation and a commitment to playing their best basketball.

The team recognizes the threat posed by the opposing center, who "plays somewhere where we can't play and that's pretty high above around the rim,” said Manning. Their strategy involved being physical, and the coach praised Krista Tsinginie-Yazzie, the junior forward, for her effectiveness in making it difficult for the opposing player to get inside shots.

The team benefits from contributions across the roster, including impressive performances from younger players. Allyson Tsosie, a freshman at KCHS, despite not always leading the team in scoring overall, often led in scoring during multiple quarters, highlighting the depth and emerging talent within the squad.

Leadership plays a crucial role, with the team captain, Haylee Nocki, exhibiting a calm and collected attitude even when returning to the state championship contention. When asked about pressure, the captain stated emphatically, "There's no pressure. We're just taking it game by game and we're just trying to get it back go back to the championship game.”

The legacy of KCHS basketball is acknowledged, with connections to past champions. However, the team's primary focus remains on the current season. The coach emphasizes the importance of being "the best team this year," noting that "the past is the past." While the history is valued, the daily emphasis is on the immediate task at hand. "We can't worry about Friday. We got to worry about Thursday. Thursday's the most important game to us right now."

The coach believes that any pressure the team feels largely comes from within the coaching staff, with the intention being positive, driving them to "living up to who they play for" given Kirtland Central's history. The external pressures from parents or the community are acknowledged, but the team seems to handle the inherent expectations well. In this crucial part of the season, the "win or go home" dynamic provides ample pressure, a situation many of these players can acknowledge from previous years, suggesting they are well-prepared for the stakes.

Overall, KCHS basketball demonstrates a winning combination of defensive prowess, strategic preparation, strong leadership, and a focused mindset. Their ability to stay grounded in the present while acknowledging their history positions them as a formidable team with a bright outlook.
